A food allergy is an exaggerated immune response to a specific food (commonly eggs, milk, peanuts, or shellfish), resulting in symptoms such as hives, wheezing, trouble swallowing, feeling faint, or gastrointestinal distress. In severe cases, anaphylaxis can occur.
