Panax Ginseng tends to be taken in doses of 200 to 400mg daily for general 'preventative' medicine, although some studies on the inclusion of Panax Ginseng in a multivitamin suggest doses as low as 40mg might be bioactive. The 400mg dose appears to confer most cognitive benefit.

These doses refer to standard 'Ginseng Extract' which is around 2-3% total Ginsenosides, and is a once daily dosage.

Trials using Korean Red Ginseng extract for erectile health and libido enhancement tend to use 3g of total KRG extract daily, in three doses of 1000mg.

1.1. Source

Panax Ginseng (of the family Araliaceae[8]), with synonyms of Korean Ginseng, Mountain Ginseng, True Ginseng, and Asian Ginseng (although this latter term refers to a few 'Ginsengs'), is a plant that has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine historically for a wide range of preventative purposes. It bears yellow-red berries (depending on cultivar[9]) although the root is typically used in a powdered form for medicinal purposes.

Up to thirteen plants belong to the Panax genera, with only five of them used medicinally in traditional medicine. These include Panax Ginseng (this article) as well as American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolius, aka Xiyangshen) Vietnamese Ginseng (Panax vietnamensis) Japanese Ginseng (Panax Japonicus) and Pseudoginseng (Panax Notoginseng).[10] Of these five, Panax Ginseng is the most commonly used species medicinally, being used in 16.6% of the 3,944 prescriptions in the Korean Clinical Pharmacopoeia written in 1610 AD.[10]

Panax Ginseng is a herb with the Species of 'Panax' and the Genera of 'Ginseng', and is the most commonly used medicinal Ginseng in this Genera (with 4 others being used medicinally, and 8 other plants in the Genera of 'Panax' not being used medicinally)

The term 'Panax' is derived from the Greek words for 'all-healing' (not panacea actually, but 'pan' for all and 'axos' for cure).[11][12] 'Ginseng' has less complimenting origins, being an English translation of the chinese word rénshen meaning 'man root', although supposedly this was a reference to the roots of the plants looking like a man's legs; therefore, a literal translation of Panax Ginseng into English is All-healing Man Root.[12] The surface of the root is wrinkled and furrowed, and its taste is sweetish at first, with a somewhat bitter aftertaste.[12]

Panax Ginseng,[13] as well as American Ginseng,[14] can be heat treated to form 'Red' Ginsengs. These are slightly different in composition to the untreated plants and confer some unique bioactives, but originate from the same plant sources.

Panax Ginseng derives its names from All-Cure (Panax) and Man Root (Ginseng, a translation from rénshen) which reference the way the root looks, like two legs of a human; the prefix of 'Red' (Red Ginseng, Red Panax Ginseng, etc.) refers to a process of heat treatment which alters the coloration

'Korean Red Ginseng', therefore, is heat-treated Panax Ginseng (as Korean Ginseng is a synonym for Panax Ginseng)

1.2. Disambiguation of 'Ginseng'

The term 'Ginseng' appears to have dual meanings, one of which is botanical in nature and the other social. The botanical term of 'Ginseng' refers to the species of Panax Ginseng and is therefore unique to this plant or different variants and chemotypes (chemical differences of the same plant species, seem with Cat's Claw in particular). The social word of 'Ginseng' appears to have been derived from how Panax Ginseng was used to increase vitality and prevent disease, and appears to have been applied to other herbs unrelated to Panax Ginseng that also have historical usage of increasing vitality or preventing disease.

'Ginseng' is both a botanical term, in reference to the species, and a social name, in regard to the ability of a plant to supposedly bolster vitality and prevent disease

As mentioned before, the plants that are still within the genera of Panax and have colloquiolly been given the name of 'Ginseng' despite not being the same species include Panax quinquefolius (American Ginseng or Xiyangshen), Panax vietnamensis (Vietnamese Ginseng), Panax Japonicus (Japanese Ginseng) and Panax Notoginseng (Pseudoginseng).

Herbs outside of the Araliaceae family bestowed the status of Ginseng include Eurycoma Longifolia Jack (Tongkat Ali or Malaysian Ginseng), Lepidium Meyenii (Maca root or Peruvian Ginseng), Gynostemma pentaphyllum (Southern or 'Cheap' Ginseng), Pfaffia paniculata (Suma Root or Brazilian Ginseng), Eleutherococcus senticosus (Siberian Ginseng), Trichopus zeylanicus (Kerala Ginseng), Kaempferia parviflora (Thai Ginseng), Dracaena angustifolia (Nam Ginseng[15]) and Withania Somnifera (Ashwagandha or Indian Ginseng).

Additionally, the herb Codonopsis pilosula has traditionally been used as a cheap substitute for Panax Ginseng and, in some texts, it appears that the Codonopsis Pilosula plant may be falsely called Panax Ginseng.[16] Codonopsis Pilosula, per se, does not have Ginseng status although it is tied into the history of Panax Ginseng being expensive and having other herbs used in place of it to cut cost; Panax Ginseng being historically expensive and limited in supply (seen also with Ganoderma lucidum, the Reishi mushroom) appears to also have influenced Gynostemma Pentaphyllum, which shares many of the saponins, being referred to as 'Cheap Ginseng' as it appears to be a cheap substitute.

1.3. 'Ginsenoside' overview

The term Ginsenoside was conceived to describe a class of many molecules that are found in Ginseng; the term refers to steroidal saponins (structures with a dammarane steroid backbone, which is a chemical designation of structure; not to be confused with anabolic steroids) and are given a designation of Rx; the X being in reference to their movement on a TLC plate in vitro with A being most polar and H being least polar.[17][18] Ginsenosides tend to be amphipathic as they inherently have a hydroxyl group on their backbone (polar) yet the backbone itself is non-polar.[12]

Despite the fact that there are well over 100 Ginsenosides in existence,[12] they all belong to four classes.

  • The Protopanaxadiol class, which has a dammarane backbone and includes Ginsenosides Ra1-3 and Rb1-2; more than 30 Ginsenosides belong to the Rb series
  • The Protopanaxatriol class, with an additional hydroxyl group on C6 (which turns 'di'ol into 'tri'ol) and includes Ginseosides Re, Rf, and Rg1
  • Oleanolic Acid type Ginsenosides (Including Ginsenoside Ro) which have a pentacyclic triterpenoid base rather than dammarane
  • Ocotillol type Ginsenosides, which have a 5-membered epoxy ring at C20; the prototypical Ocotillol-type Ginseoside is actually Makonoside R2 from Vietnamese Ginseng[19]

The 100 or so Ginsenosides are, for the most part, glycosides of the above classes. Various sugar molecules are bound to differing areas of the above four molecular backbones to create unique molecules (and thus a unique Ginsenoside designation).

All 'Ginsenosides' are just one of four molecules that have varying sugar attachments to the molecule, slightly altering their shape. Despite there being over 100 Ginsenosides in Panax Ginseng, they can be narrowed down to one of four classes based on the molecule the sugars are modifying

1.4. Composition

Panax Ginseng contains a variety of active components called 'Ginsenosides', which are steroid-like saponins that are unique to the Ginseng species (in regards to the chemical structure; not anabolic properties); well over 100 Ginsenosides exist,[12] and the following list contains the major ones:

  • Ginsenoside Ro at 20.1+/-0.4 (rhizome) and 2.2+/-0.4 (root) in mg/g ethanolic extract
  • Ginsenoside Rb(1) 14.6+/-0.2 (rhizome) and 4.8+/-0.1 (root) in mg/g ethanolic extract
  • Ginsenoside Rb(2) 5.5+/-0.1 (rhizome) and 2.0+/-0.4 (root) in mg/g ethanolic extract
  • Ginsenoside Rc 7.1+/-0.5 (rhizome) and 2.6+/-0.2 (root) in mg/g ethanolic extract
  • Ginsenoside Rd 2.5+/-0.2 (rhizome) and 0.2+/-0.2 (root) in mg/g ethanolic extract
  • Ginsenoside Re 10.8+/-0.2 (rhizome) and 2.6+/-0.3 (root) in mg/g ethanolic extract
  • Ginsenoside Rf 1.9+/-0.1 (rhizome) and 1.3+/-0.1 (root) in mg/g ethanolic extract
  • Ginsenoside Rg(1) 7.1+/-0.5 (rhizome) and 2.6+/-0.2 (root) in mg/g ethanolic extract

Other compounds that are found in Ginseng that are non-caloric (phytochemicals) and not under the umbrella term of Ginsenoside include:

  • Polyynes (compounds with alternating single and triple bonds) including falcarinol, falcarintriol, acetic acid and linolenic acid[11]
  • Some MicroRNAs[20]

With caloric components (included in the root itself, and may be processed out of a capsule constaining Panax Ginseng as they contain calories) such as proteins and carbohydrates include:

  • The Polysaccharide 'Ginsan', which appears to be an immune system modulator[21]
  • Shorter oligosaccharides[22] and beta-glucans[23]
  • Polysaccharides that may possess anti-cancer effects,[24] may be classified as either neutral or acidic, with the latter having more biological relevance
  • L-Arginine[25] and GABA as amino acids[25]
For the most part, the unique properties of Panax Ginseng are related to the Ginsenoside content (which is, for the most part, unique; Gynostemma pentaphyllum and America Ginseng share many of the Ginsenosides); the polysaccharides in the root itself may have some unique properties, with most other compounds being unremarkable. The above is in reference to the root only, which is by far the most used part of the plant

The seeds of Panax Ginseng include:

  • Ginsenoside Rg2 at 0.0012-0.0025%, Re at 0.0028%, Rd at 0.0011%[26]
  • Panaxadione at 0.00043% dry weight, 20(S)-protopanaxatriol (0.00052%), 3-keto-20(S)-protopanaxatriol (0.001%), [26]
  • Dencichine, aka beta-N-oxalyl-L-alpha,beta-diaminopropionic acid (beta-ODAP) at 0.43% of total seed weight and 70% of total amino acids in the seeds, with content declining with age of the plant[25]
  • Saringosteryl and its glycoside[26]
  • Daucosterol and 5a,6b-dihydroxydaucosterol[26]
The seeds of Panax Ginseng do not have as much of a Ginsenoside content, relative to the roots; they tend to be a subpar supplemental option

The fruits of Panax Ginseng include:

  • High yields of Ginsenoside Re (up to 6% dry weight[9][27]) up to 28-fold higher than the Re content of the roots
  • Ginsenosides Rb1 (0.2%), Rc (0.1%), Rd (0.1%), Rg1 (0.04%)
  • The indole alkaloid Ginsenine[28]

Total Ginsenosides in the berries can reach 9.09% dry weight, which is up to 4.8-fold higher than the roots on a dry weight basis;[27][29]

Berries have substantially more Ginsenoside Re content than do root extracts, and would be preferable if the biological effects of Panax Ginseng desired are due to the Re content

Ginseng plants are typically grown for 4-6 years before harvested for medicinal purposes (as opposed to consumption as a food product, where fresh ginseng can be harvested after two years[10]); levels of total ginsenosides tend to decrease after the fifth year of life.[30]

When selecting ginseng products, the rhizome (thick vertical root aspect) appears to have more ginsenosides on a weight basis than do the roots, although both of them possess Ginsenosides; supplements that standardize to a certain total ginsenoside content may not need differentiation due to standardization. The fruits tend to have much more Re, so if you want that particular Ginsenoside for any particular reason then the fruits are the way to go

Although the Ginsenosides are seen as the active ingredients, for immune system related and immunological purposes the polysaccharides cannot be forgotten about (if doubting the potency of polysaccharides, please refer to Ganoderma lucidum)
There are methods to discriminate between 'True' Panax Ginseng and American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) despite carrying many of the same bioactives. The Ginsenoside Rf is unique to Panax Ginseng while the Pseudoginsenoside F11 is unique to American; the ratio of the two found in any given commerical product can be used to determine source of Ginseng.[31][32]

As for the differences between American and Asian (Panax) Ginseng, the collection of Ginsenosides Rb1, Rb2, Rc, Rd, Re, and Rg1 comprise over 90% of the total Ginsenosides in Panax Ginseng, with most or all of the bioactive effects being traced back to these six Ginsenosides.[33][34] When looking for the major bioactive Ginsenosides that make up 70% of American Ginseng, five of the six are similar yet Rb2 is seemingly absent and replaced with Rb3.[35] Rf is also in higher quantities in American rather than Asian Ginseng.[35][12]

American Ginseng and Asian Ginseng (the latter being true Panax Ginseng) are similar plants with a lot of the exact same bioactives, just in different amounts; however, these 'differing amounts' may make the actual effects of the ginseng different if the molecules actually possess different effects. Common effects of Ginsenosides in general may be the same between the two plants


Edit2. Types and Forms of Panax Ginseng

2.1. Korean Red Ginseng

Similar to how various forms of Tea from Camellia Sinensis (green, white, black) are distinguished due to processing yet are the same plant, the difference between Panax Ginseng and Korean Red Ginseng is merely processing; they are the same plant.

Korean Red Ginseng (KRG) is Panax Ginseng that is steamed and then dried, which appears to change some of the bioactive compounds. While Panax Ginseng tends to have Ginsenoside Rb1, Ro, and Re as the main components KRG touts Ginsenoside Rb(3) as the main bioactive.[13] The latter can be metabolized to Ginsenoside Rb(2) (not unique to KRG) by intestinal bacteria, and KRG also possesses an Rg(3) content which is unique to KRG.[36] Rb(3) and Rg(3) are seen as the main active ingredients of KRG, and the steaming and fermentation process favorably alters the Ginsenoside profile to favor these two.[37] Further fermentation of already steamed/dried Red Ginseng, resulting in fermented Red Ginseng, further enhances the anti-inflammatory and anti-nocireceptive (pain-dulling) effects of it.[38]

When looking at total Ginsenoside content, one study noted that KRG had equal to or higher levels of the main ginsenosides when compared to Panax Ginseng, which varied by source (KRG rivaling 'Wild ginseng' from Shangshen, outperforming cultivated ginseng) but this may not be the standard.[39] In general, compounds sold commercially (Korean market) seem to vary from 0.5-1.1% ginsenosides by weight[37] which tends to be lower than the averages for fresh ginseng (and especially the research standards of G115 and NAGE, Panax Ginseng at 4% and 10% total ginsenosides, respectively).

In general, biotransformation of Ginsenosides in Panax Ginseng when it becomes 'red' from steaming and fermentation mimics colonic metabolism. Not too many unique products are formed (although some are) and many are metabolized to their bioactive forms, which may enhance the effects of Panax Ginseng or at least make them more reliable from one person to another

Additionally, via Amadori rearrangements there can be formations of unique compounds during fermentation called arginyl-fructose and arginyl-fructosyl-glucose (also known as maltulosyl arginine);[40][41] these compounds show some promise in inhibiting carbohydrate uptake from the diet.[42] These compounds also appear to bind to minerals (particularly copper) and exert anti-oxidative properties,[41] and at least Arginyl-Fructose can be absorbed after oral administration to rats, with the other Amadori product possibly losing its glucose molecule and becoming Arginyl-Fructose.[43] The total content of amadori products in Korean Red Ginseng is quite variable and dependent on steaming, and a study measuring 8 commerical products obtained in Korea noted between 0.85-2.51% for arginyl-fructose and 0.25-2.64% with arginyl-fructosyl-glucose

Some unique products to Korean Red Ginseng that are not related to the Ginsenosides, two Amadori rearrangement products common to the fermentation and steaming process. Fructose binding to the amino acid L-Arginine or Maltose binding to the same amino acid, may be bioactive

2.2. White Ginseng

White Ginseng is a term used to refer to Panax Ginseng that has been cultivated and then air dried, as opposed to a steam drying to form Red Ginseng.[11] The process of air drying follows peeling of the root and drying until the moisture content is below 12%, and turns the root into a yellow-ish white color.[11][10] Some of the bioactives may be lost during this process.

2.3. G115 and NAGE

G115 is a patented extraction of Panax Ginseng patented by Pharmaton, Switzerland that contains 4% ginsenosides by total weight[44][45] while NAGE is a standardized extract from the same company containing 10% ginensosides by weight.[45] Both extracts tend to be used in research to ensure quality standards and control for total amount of Ginsenosides, with one study noting that purity of the extracts ranged from 95.9-100% as assessed by HPLC; both extracts are rich in Rb1 and Re, and fairly reflective of what ginseng (naturally occurring, noted in the opening section) should contain when looking at the ratios between ginsenosides.[45]

One study specifically breaking down the component Ginsenosides noted that G115 had 1.07% (Rb1), 0.66% (Rb2), 0.67% (Rc), 0.46% (Rd), 0.56% (Re) 0.14% (Rf) and 0.44% (Rg1) while NAGE had 4.56% (Rb1), 0.31% (Rb2), 1.09% (Rc), 1.43% (Rd), 2.36% (Re), and 0.24% (Rg1) with no Rf detected.[45]

Simply standardized vessels for Panax Ginseng, with fairly high validity of being 4% Ginsenosides (G115) and 10% Ginsenosides (NAGE), used in research not because they are somehow better than the Ginseng plant, but because their contents are reliable

3.1. Metabolism

Ginsenosides are able to metabolize from one to another, and the paths of metabolism diverge based on which of the four basic groups the Ginsenoside belongs to structurally (protopanaxadiol, protopanaxotril, etc; mentioned in the structures section).

Protopanaxadiol compounds such as Rb1, Rb2, and Rc tend to be metabolized to an active molecule called Compound K, with the elongated name of 20-O-b-D-glucopyranosyl-20(S)-protopanaxadiol.[46] Oral administraiton of Rb1 in isolation can cause blood increases in Compound K in rats[47][48] and urinary increases, despite Rb1 not being detected in the urine.[49]

Ginsenoside Re (protopanaxatriol) has been proposed to be metabolized into Rg1 and Rg2 (two different pathways) by colonic bacterial fermentation; both Rg1 and Rg2 can further metabolize into Rh1, but only Rg1 can metabolize into F1 with both Rh1 and F1 (the second stages of metabolism) being finally converted into the basic protopanaxatriol skeleton to be excreted via the urine.[46] This general metabolic chain was proposed earlier, although without the intermediates.[50]

General metabolism of the Ginsenosides appears to be related to the protopanaxa-diol annd -triol backbones, with interconversion of metabolites in vivo

3.2. Enzymatic Interactions

An In vitro study assessing the interactions of ginsenosides found that Panax Ginseng was able to reduce the catalytic activity of CYP1A1 and CYP1A2 (two variants of Aromatase) and CYP1B1 in a dose-dependent manner that correlated with Ginsenoside content.[45] The inhibition appeared to be competitive for CYP1A1 and mixed for the other two, with CYP1A2 being more susceptable. When the ginsenosides Rb1, Rb2, Rc, Rd, Re, Rf, and Rg1 were tested in isolation all ginsenosides failed to inhibit these three enzymes nor did they inhibit 7-ethoxyresorufin O-dealkylation (EROD) activity when they were added to the same concentration previously used with whole Panax, and regained inhibitory potential when the concentration was elevated to 50uM with more potency seen with Rc (75% inhibition of CYP1A2) and none from Re.[45] This suggests that total ginsenoside content may be more relevant than an individual ginsenoside, as the inhibition seems to occur with most ginsenosides.[45]


Edit4. Skeletal Muscle and Physical Performance

4.1. Fatigue and Endurance

A study in mice using a forced swim test noted that the polysaccharide content of Panax Ginseng may offer benefits to endurance via reducing fatigue, as administration of polysaccharides at 50, 100, and 200mg/kg bodyweight for 15 days noted that 1 hour after the last dose that only 200mg/kg bodyweight significantly improved performance.[51] When the neutral polysaccharide fragment (40, 100, 160, and 200mg/kg) were compared against the acidic polysaccharide fragment, it was found that all doses of the acidic polysaccharides significantly improved performance and were the active ingredients (although the highest dose only of neutral polysaccharides also showed benefit).[51] The acid fragment was more effective at enhancing circulating glucose, suppressing circulating TGs, and increased SOD expression relative to both the neutral fragment and unsupplemented control.[51]

Another study using 1, 10, and 100mg/kg in mice (10% Ginsenosides) failed to demonstrate a statistically significant improvement in forced swim time after 7 days of supplementation in mice (although trended towards significance).[52]

4.2. Hormonal Indices

One study using 2g of Panax Ginseng 60% ethanolic extract in endurance trained athletes (minimum 2 years experience with 5 hours exercise weekly) for 6 weeks failed to notice any significant changes in testosterone, cortisol, or their ratio associated with Panax Ginseng.[53]

4.3. Exercise Immunology

A study on 30 male endurance runners failed to establish any altered immune cell count or receptor (CD3+, CD4+, CD8+, CD20+) expression after 6 weeks of having 2g of 60% ethanolic extract of Panax Ginseng alongside their running regimens.[53]

4.4. Temperature

One study done in mice who were primed to be either cold (lower caloric intake, cold water swimming until fatigue) or feel warm (excess of dietary protein) noted that the addition the Panax Ginseng root was able to confer a warming effect on both groups, as assessed by less time spent on a warming pad located near the mice.[54]


Edit5. Neurology

5.1. Appetite

Ginseng is one of few herbs that has traditionally been used as an appetite stimulant for anorexia (appetite-loss) and cancer-related cachexia to stimulate appetite,[55] alongside the vertical root of Astragalus membranaceus.[56] Studies looking into the appetite enhancing effet of Panax Ginseng are lacking, with a study which injected isolated Ginsenoside Rb1 and found no influence on appetite per se, but a prevention of heat and surgery induced reduction of appetite; in accordance with traditional claims.[57] One other rat study merely measuring food intake as an outcome parameter noted increases of 37.7% and 50% in normal chow and high-fat chow with 3% Red Ginseng, respectively, without significant differences in weight gain observed with the added calories (which was attributed to decreasing fat absorption from the diet, due to in vitro lipase testing and fecal analysis).[58] This study used male Balb/c mice 8 weeks of age with no health abnormalities.[58]

Ginsenoside-enriched fragments of Panax Ginseng at 12.5-25mg/kg (relatively low dose to anti-obesity doses) appear to somewhat attenuate radiation-induced pica (appetite for non-food products) in rats[59] and the berries may have the same effect at a slightly higher dose of 50-150mg/kg.[60]

Actual studies done on the subject matter note a reduction in food intake in obese mice possibly secondary to regulation of NPY in the hypothalamus (possibly secondary to IL-1b modulation[61]), using an isolated Ginsenoside mixture at 200mg/kg bodyweight and suppressing intake by 12.4-21.2% that also affected lean mice over 3 weeks.[62] Another study using Panax Ginseng berries found that 150mg/kg bodyweight was able to suppress food intake by 16% of the control group in diet-induced obese mice, and this was demonstrated to not occur with isolated ginsenoside Re at 20mg/kg bodyweight; this study tested lean mice, but did not report food intake alterations,[63] food intake suppression may be more related to Rb1[64] or protopanaxadiols in general, including Rb1-3 and Ra1-3 (amongst others) which have been shown to reduce food intake by 16.3% in high-fat fed mice given 50mg/kg.[65]

It is possible that Red Ginseng ginsenosides (also applies to Panax Ginseng in general) may help regulate abnormal feeding patterns with no influence on normal feeding patterns, but surprisingly little research has been done on appetite stimulation for which Ginseng is traditionally said to do. No human studies directed to answer this topic either, but potent and acute suppression of intake is seen in obese mice that overeat with mixed results in lean mice

5.2. General Cognition

A study in young healthy adults using 200 or 400mg acutely noted increased reaction time associated with 400mg, but not 200mg, 2.5 hours after ingestion. Interestingly, 200mg led to slightly but significantly slower reaction times on the first day of tested, which may have been secondary to an induction of calmess.[66] These improvements in reaction time have been replicated with 400mg of 4% Ginsenoside extract (G115) in regards to spatial reaction time at the same time after ingestion, but only when combined with Ginkgo biloba did they reach statistical significance at 4 hours post ingestion for simple reaction time.[67] A third test measuring reaction time noted some significant improvements, but most results were statistically insignificane; the results of this test may be secondary to anti-fatigue.[68] The addition of Ginseng to Ginkgo appears to improve the parameters related to accuracy, and the 'relaxing' reports of Ginseng may reduce frequency of errors in cognitive tests.[67]

Another study by the same researchers tested 200mg and 400mg of G115 in healthy young adults found improved performance on the serial sevens subtraction task,[68] a test for intellectual efficiency.[69] Lesser inconsistent benefits were acheived on serial threes and on a reduction of errors in serial 3s, but little benefit was seen in reduction of errors in serial sevens.[68]

Alertness and relaxation specifically have also been noted with a Ginseng multi-nutrient combination supplement when taken over a period of 12 weeks, when compared to baseline values.[1]

Panax ginseng might improve reaction speed and accuracy, but by currently unknown mechanisms and relative potency to other herbs; it doesn't reach statistical significance all the time, so it may be unreliable as well.

Many of the general cognitive benefits may be secondary to the anti-fatigue effects of Ginsenosides and Polysaccharides, paired with persistance causing differences from the fatigued placebo

5.3. Depression, Anxiety, Stress

In mice, 100mg/kg of the acidic polysaccharide fragment of Ginseng was able to decrease depressive symptoms in mice while improving social interactions and reducing aggression.[70] 200mg/kg appeared to not be significantly effective on these parameters. Anti-depressive effects have been noted in mice given Ginsenosides as well, suggesting both main components of Ginseng are active regarding depression.[71]

Red Ginseng also appears to be effective, with either hydrolysis of Red Ginseng or acetate fermentation (fermented Korean Red Ginseng) being significantly more effective at exerting anti-depressive effects in mice relative to normal Red Ginseng.[72]

In regards to stress, a possible mechanism may be altering genetic transcription of some enzymes.[73] This study used pure saponin extracts in vitro at 10ug/mL and orally to rats at 200mg/kg noted that the mRNA levels of Tyrosine Hydroxylase and dopamine β-hydroxylase that was increased with stimuli was attenuated with Ginseng by 35.6 and 48.2% in adrenal glands (induced by stress) and 57.2% and 48.9% in neurons (induced by Nicotine), respectively.[73]

5.4. Memory and Learning

When looking at Ginsenoside Rb1 in isolation, it appears to be responsible for enhanced learning rats in the hippocampus. It can enhance NGF-induced neurite growth in the ganglia of chicks,[74] and when fed orally to rats at 2mg/kg daily for 30 days showed a decrease in acquisition phase of learning, suggesting that the enhanced memory seen later was secondary to better learning.[75] This latter study failed to note any significant influence on motivation despite the enhanced learning, and after 30 days there was no significant difference in immunostaining of the hippocampus suggesting that no significant neurogenesis occurred.[75]

5.5. Neuroprotection

In studies assessing learning deficits (cognitive decline) associated with toxins or aging, Ginseng appears to be somewhat effective at reducing the rate of learning deficits.[76][77][78]

Oral administration of the Korean Red Ginseng compound Ginsenoside Rg3 has shown protective effects against cerebral ischemia-induced injury in animals,[79] and in transient focal cerebral ischemia where 5, 10, and 20mg/kg Rg3 was given in feed found that 10mg/kg was as effective as 1mg/kg active control Nimodipine in reducing the cognitive deficit induced by ischemia, and 20mg/kg appeared to be more protective but not significantly so.[80] The percentage of infarct volume in the hippocampus was reduced to a similar degree in both 20mg/kg and Nimodipine, at about 20.1+/-2.8%, suggesting the potential to improve mitochondrial activity after brain injury with Rg3; and other measures of neurodegradation (TUNEL positive cells, Calpain-1 or Capsase-3 positive cells) were equally reduced by 10-20mg/kg Rg3 and Nimopidine.[80] The mechanism by which Ginseng may protect from Ischemia can be through deregulating the expected sequence of hypoxia,[81] as the incubation of ginsenosides from Korean Red Ginseng (KRG) appear to reduce the activity of a protein (Hypoxia-Inducible factor-1; HIF1) on the nucleus at the post-transcriptional level, but incubation with ginsenosides appears to actually increase HIF1 activity despite lesser actions.[81] This appears to be since HIF1 needs to bind to the nuclear factor ARNT to induce its effects, and incubation with Korean Red Ginesng prevents this.[81]

5.6. Fatigue

One study in humans assessing Panax Ginseng ingestion at either 200mg or 400mg acutely in healthy young adults noted that 200mg was able to reduce a fall in mood associated with prolonged (4 hour) psychological testing and 400mg induced a state of calmness.[66] There were no significantly different effects when comparing the first dose against the 8th consecutive daily dose, suggesting no tolerance nor build-up effect.

Another study replicated this reduction of fatigue with 200mg of the G115 extract (4% Ginsenosides) where a 10 minute neural test was performed, followed by 50 minutes rest, and then the same test 6 times in immediate succession.[68] 400mg was still effective, but less so than 200mg.

5.7. Cerebrovascular Function

A study done in humans assessing blood flow to the brain after Ginseng ingestion in healthy persons where 200mg G115 extract noted significantly reduced P300 latency (not amplitude) in all five tested cerebral lobes (main four, but left and right temporal tested independently) with significantly reduced beta and theta waveband power (in mV2/Hz) while alpha was reduced only in the frontal lobe, where beta and theta were more potent.[82] No significant differneces were seen between placebo and Ginseng in regards to CNV data, and the above differences were seen with eyes closed, with no significant differences on any parameter with eyes open.

A systemic review of Cerebrovascular effects of Ginseng only found two studies, the aforementioned study and one other that is not indexed online.[83] The aforementioned study[82] was rated high quality on the Jadad scale, with the other of low quality; their combination constituted moderate evidence, but both showed similar results.

5.8. Mood and Quality of Life

One study using 200 and 400mg Panax Ginseng found increased calmness in a relatively dose-dependent manner after acute ingestion in healthy adults.[66] These same doses and product were used in another trial on young adults over a period of 60 days in another trial, which failed to note any significant changes in any mood parameter measured.[84] Interesting, a study conducted over a period of 8 weeks with a measurement at the 4 week marker found significant improvements in mental health and function as well as social function (assessed by the Short Form-36 Health Survey v.2) at 4 weeks, but the benefits associated with 200mg Ginseng became not significantly different than placebo at 8 weeks.[85] One of the studies on mood and cognition that measured reactions to the initial dose and reactions to the 8th dose (when a once daily dose was taken) found that some parameters were less potent than baseline, but none of these trends of attenuation reached statistical significance.[66]

It is possible that the mood improving effects of Panax are short-lived, either somewhere between 1-4 weeks before it starts to lose efficacy or perhaps slightly longer. That being said, acute usage of Panax does appear to improve subjective well being and mood in otherwise healthy persons according to some evidence

Another study using a lower dose of 100mg or 200mg found that, over the course of 8 weeks, mood was improved in type II diabetics; this may be secondary to a bettering of the glycemic profile.[86] A study using Ginseng in menopause failed to note global relief of menopausal symptoms but did note significant improvements in depression, well-being, and subjective ratings of 'health' over a period of 16 weeks.[87]

One study that used a Ginseng multi-nutrient formulation that noted statistically significant improvements across the board on alertness and relaxation (placebo and ginseng both improved, significantly better effects in ginseng though) noted that when the results were controlled for only the persons in the lowest quintile of scores on the Visual Analogue Scale at baseline (a psychometric test) that there were also significant improvements in depressive scores and vitality, giving some evidence that the effects of Panax may be more pronounced in those more deviant from 'normal' baseline values.[1]

The above may be overridden when it comes to persons who are not 'healthy young adults', where improvements in healthy may vicariously increase mood over a longer period of time

Interestingly, an increase in quality of life is seen with multivitamins containing 40mg Panax Ginseng (as G115 extract) more-so than using standard multivitamins without the Ginseng, suggesting low dose Panax Ginseng may be valuable to add into a multivitamin formulation.[5] Ginseng also appeared to abrogate an increase in diastolic blood pressure seen in the multivitamin group (for unknown reasons) and attenuated weight gain. This study was comparative with no placebo control, and thus the improvements seen in both groups could be attributed to placebo.[5] Panax Ginseng has been investigated as part of a multivitamin formulation at 100mg as well, and a reduced occurrence of the flu as well as increased libido were both statistically significant between groups (overall sample size of 114) alongside the increase in subjective well being, although the control group used pure placebo rather than a multivitamin without ginseng.[88]

Benefits with Ginseng-containing multinutrient formulations are not always present, with trends towards improvement that are not statistically significant being seen[3] and sometimes benefits only seen with the subject's dietary habits are deemed as 'poor'.[2]

Ginseng might be a useful addition to multivitamin formulations when it comes to improving mood due to having some bioactivity at low doses (40-100mg), but its inclusion in multivitamin formulations is not completely reliable and valid with studies showing benefits as well as no significant benefits. It is plausible it may improve mood more than placebo in persons with worse baseline parameters of health than persons with better baseline parameters

5.9. Drug Withdrawal

A study in rats undergoing morphine withdrawal found that when wild ginseng (50, 100, 200mg/kg bodyweight) or cultivated Panax Ginseng (500mg/kg bodyweight) was injected alongside the morphine, that subsequent withdrawal (over 72 hours) showed significantly less pro-anxiety and depressive effects in the 200mg/kg group (with the other three groups trending towards less anxiety and depression, but not reaching significance).[89] These effects correlated with CFY and NPY immunoreactivity in the brain, suggesting that Wild Ginseng can act to normalize corticotrophin-releasing factor (CFY) and neuropeptide Y (NPY).[89] Due to increased immunoreactivity of these molecules also being seen in nicotine dependence,[90] it is plausible that Ginseng may interact with nicotine withdrawal.


Edit6. Interactions with Glucose Metabolism

6.1. Absorption

Compounds formed during amadori rearrangements in Red Ginseng fermentation (arginyl-fructose and arginyl-fructosyl-glucose) appear to have minor inhibitory potential on carbohydrate digestive enzymes, intestinal glucosidases and pancreatic alpha-amylase in vitro.[42] When measuring the potency on intestinal sucrase, IC50 values of 6.40 and 6.20 mM were seen; these were slightly more effective than effects on pancreatic amylase, measuring IC50 values at 36.30 and 37.60 mM (values for arginyl-fructose and arginyl-fructosyl-glucose; respectively). When tested in vivo, 100mg/kg given alongside 1.5g/kg starch or 2g/kg sucrose was able to decrease the circulating levels of carbohydrates by 10-14% (arginyl-fructose) and 6-20% (arginyl-fructosyl-glucose) with the latter being highly effective at reducing circulating levels induced by sucrose.[42]

A reduction in the AUC of glucose has also been observed in humans in response to 6g of Korean Red Ginseng root extract, which was able to reduce glucose AUC by 29% at the most effective dose and 17% when all (highly variable) doses were averaged out; however, it was correlated to the Rb1 content rather than Amadori products.[91]

Absorption may be hindered by high doses of Korean Red Ginseng, surprisingly not by either the active Ginsenosides or polysaccharides but instead by products unique to Korean Red Ginseng

6.2. Serum

When 200mg and 400mg of Panax Ginseng G115 (4% Ginsenosides) is given to healthy humans, a decrease in blood glucose of 0.646-0.664mmol (11%) within an hour which was attenuated slightly (0.580-0.594mmol, 9.7-10.4%) 30 minutes later; the higher dose group then appeared to deepen the drop in blood glucose (0.933+/-0.213mmol drop from baseline, 15.7%) while 200mg further attenuated to a reduction of 0.432+/-0.182mmol, or 7.6%.[68] Another study by the same research group measuring blood glucose after G115 only measured 60 minutes after ingestion, but found that 200mg reduced blood glucose by 11.5% and that this decrease in blood glucose was effectively negated when consuming 25g glucose.[92]

The unique Korean Red Ginsenoside, 20(S)Rg(3), was found to decrease glucose exposure in mice by 6-9% after administration of 12.5-25mg/kg isolated Rg3 orally, but of lesser potency than the active control, 20mg/kg glipizide.[93] This decrease in exposure seemed to be secondary to augmenting insulin release (and increasing circulating insulin levels) as well as activating AMPK in skeletal muscle cells and pancreatic cells to induce glucose uptake.[93] When comparing isomers, 20(S) appeared to be increase insulin while 20(R)Rg3 did not.

These mechanisms in muscle cells appear to extend to other Ginsenosides such as Rb1[94] and Rb2,[95] the former of which is the precursor ginsenoside from which Rg(3) is formed from.[96] Rb1 was not significantly different in potency at 20 and 40uM concentration in muscle cells for inducing glucose uptake when compared to the control drug Metformin, but Metformin (500uM) trended to outperform Rb1.[94] Similar trends were seen for GLUT4 translocation.

AMPK activation also occurs in liver cells and by Ginsenoside Re, and may contribute to lesser glucose levels circulating.[97] Re actually appears to be fairly potent at this, and the berries of Panax Ginseng (higher source of Re) appear to be more effective than root extracts at inducing hypoglycemia in animals.[98][99]

In healthy persons, can acutely reduce blood glucose up to and around 10% within an hour after ingestion, but only if consumed alone. Does not reduce glucose in this short time frame if consumed alongside carbohdyrates. Korean Red Ginseng might be more potent, but there is a lack of evidence

6.3. Diabetes (Type I)

Type I Diabetes is insulin-dependent, usually caused by genetics and tied in to immunology; this is not the more common diet-induced form of diabetes (Type II) although there are interactions with the diet in disease pathology. Korean Red Ginseng for 2 weeks in mice later injected with streptozotocin (to induce Type I diabetes) was associated with better glucose levels in the mice at rest, possibly secondary to protective effects on the pancreas and a trend to normalize insulin levels.[100]

6.4. Diabetes (Type II)

In animal models of diet-induced Type II Diabetes, Korean Red Ginseng appears to be effective at increasing insulin sensitivity in muscle tissue when fed at 200mg/kg bodyweight.[101] This same dose in a mouse model appears to work vicariously through AMPK activation in muscle tissue.[102] Although the ginsenosides Rb1 and Rg3 were mentioned in a previous section for AMPK activation, the polysaccharide Ginsan appears to also be active on this metabolic pathway at oral doses of 300-500mg/kg bodyweight.[103]

Hepatic gluconeogenesis (production of glucose in the liver), a major source of circulating glucose, appears to also be suppressing in animal models in response to Ginsenosides,[104] particularily Rg2.[105]

Animal and in vitro studies demonstrate the desirable mechanisms of action for Ginseng to be an effective anti-diabetic medication

One systemic review on human studies, however,[106] using Cochrane evaluation criteria and searching 14 databases found four randomized trials in humans of good quality with three comparing Red Ginseng against placebo, only one of which is indexed in Medline.[107] It was noted that after a meta-analysis of these three studies in diabetic persons, Korean Red Ginseng failed to significantly differ from placebo in regards to HbA1c, insulin sensitivity, or fasting blood glucose or insulin.[106] This study also concluded that due to the lack of information it is difficult to draw conclusions at this point in time.[106]

Evidence for rehabilitative effects of Korean Red Ginseng on Diabetes Mellitus is not currently convincing, the aforementioned studies done in vitro and over the short term may not influence disease pathology over a longer period of time, but instead demonstrate only acute benefit


Edit7. Interactions with Hormones

7.1. Testosterone

Studies in healthy subjects with normal testicular function (both human and rodent) are uncommon for Panax Ginseng. A study in rats using Panax Ginseng at 1% or 5% of their feed intake found that testosterone was non-significantly increased at 1% (to 108% of baseline) while the 5% group experienced an increase to 162% of baseline; from 3.63ng/mL to 5.91ng/mL.[108] These doses of Ginseng increased food intake, but without concomitant increases in body weight, but rather a decrease. Interestingly, a decrease in prostate weight was also seen, with a 23% reduction in hypertrophy at the 5% dosage.[108] Conversely, A study in athletes where Ginseng dosed at 20g of the root extract and given orally immediately after physical training failed to notice any influences on testosterone levels during a two-hour recovery period.[109] It is possible that the increase in testosterone in the aforementioned study was secondary to increased food intake, due to its low magnitude.

For those with impaired testicular function, one study conducted in men with infertility (oligoasthenospermia) found that supplementation with Panax Ginseng raised testosterone relative to baseline, suggesting that Panax has the ability to normalize testosterone levels.[110] Another study on men with erectile dysfunction failed to note statistically significant improvements from baseline after 8 weeks of supplementation at 2,700mg daily (4.88 +/-2.16ng/mL to 4.48+/-2.02ng/mL when averaged out), but noted that out of 7 persons with a baseline level less than 3ng/mL (hypogonadism) that 4 of them normalized after 8 weeks. There variability in this sample made the results not statistically significant.[111] Finally, a third study on men with erectile dysfunction failed to note any significant improvement of testosterone from 3g of Korean Red Ginseng daily for 12 weeks.[112]

Has the mechanisms to increase testosterone, preliminary evidence suggests that this does not work in healthy athletes (although the study is of questionable quality and is only one), it appears that it might increase testosterone when testosterone is suppressed in periods of infertility and hypogonadism, which might be related to erectile dysfunction (although erectile dysfunction per se does not seem to be enough to conclude that it will boost testosterone)

Other studies note that Ginseng has 5a-reductase inhibitory potential, being able to reduce the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is attributed to Ginsenoside Ro (IC50 of 259.4uM, 18.2% inhibition) and also seen with Ginsenoside Rg(3) (IC50 86.1uM, 53% inhibition) which is unique to Red Panax Ginseng.[39] The Rhizome extracts tend to be more suppressive than root extracts, and in comparing red ginseng to normal ginseng the former appears to be slightly more effective in vitro, and the percent inhibition of Ginsensoside Rg(3) at 100-200uM (53-77%) rivalled that of finasteride at 0.25uM (66.2%).[39] The authors of this study hypothesized that Ginsenoside Ro occupies the ligand binding spot of the 5-AR enzyme, due to ginsenosides in general being ligands to steroid receptors.[113]

Ginsenoside Rg(3) was later investigated for its potent 5-AR inhibitory potential, and found that injections of a water extract of Red Ginseng Extract were highly effective in suppressing prostate growth induced by testosterone.[114] Whereas control had their prostates weighing in at 1.43+/-0.081 (prostate to body weight ratio, higher values signifying larger prostates) testosterone therapy increased prostate size to 160% of control whereas 100mg/kg injections and 200mg/kg injections suppressed this growth to 116% and 104%, respectively.[114] In vitro results also showed inhibition of testosterone-induced cellular proliferation and reduction of the kallikrein-3 promotor activity and levels due to Ginsenoside Rg(3).[114]

Appears to have 5-alpha reductase inhibitory potential, and may cause a backlog of testosterone via inhibition of its conversion to DHT (a similar phenomena that is seen with Fenugreek); this may mean possible increases in testosterone seen could also be attributed to less DHT conversion

When investigating direct androgen receptor effects, Rh1 failed to exert any effect on the androgen receptor at concentrations of 50uM, a dose sufficient to cause estrogen-like effects.[115] Elsewhere, 20μg/mL of the herb has failed to cause antiandrogenic effects at the level of the receptor in vitro.[116]

Does not appear to significantly influence the androgen receptor

7.2. Estrogen

Several ginsenosides have been found to be agonists (activators) of the estrogen receptor in vitro, such as Rg1,[117] Rb1,[118] Rh1,[115] and Ginsenoside Re vicariously through its metabolite Rh1.[46]

When looking at Rg1, the aglycone (ginsenoside without carbohydrates) was found to not significantly influence estrogenic signalling as assessed by thymidine uptake into breast cancer cells.[117] The Rg1 glycone and estrogen both did, with the EC50 value of Rg1 being 0.5pM and more potent than estrogen at very small (3x10−13 M) concentrations, losing efficacy at higher concentrations; the EC50 value as assessed by luciferase tests was 10pM, and all effects of Rg1 through the estrogen receptor were blocked by an estrogen receptor antagonist, and Rg1 failed to displace already bound 17β-estradiol (suggesting it cannot act as a selective estrogen modulator).[117] Estrogenic effects via Rg1 have also been implicated as being neuroprotective, particularily in post-menopausal females (theory due to low estrogen)[119][120][121] and has shown benefit in animal models of menopause (ovariectomized animals).[122]

When looking at Rb1, it can activate both estrogen receptors (alpha and beta) with maximal efficacy at 100uM (highest tested dose) with 91% the potency of 17β-estradiol on alpha but 60% on beta; Rb1 does not appear to act as a direct ligand as it does not compete with estradiol and does not bind sufficiently with either receptor when alone in medium, yet it exerts actions through the receptor.[118]

Rh1 is unlike the other two ginsenosides as it can displace up to 44% of estradiol from receptors in MCF7 cells when at a concentration of 50uM,[118] at this concentration of 50uM it does appear to activate estrogen receptors to a slightly less potent extent as 1-10nM estradiol, however, a dose that is 5000-10,000 higher than the equipotent dose of estradiol.[115] Incubation with anti-estrogen receptors abolishes the estrogen-like effects of Rh1.[115] The ginsenoside Re can potentially influence estrogen signalling, but its metabolism into Rh1 via colonic bacteria makes it more potent.[46]

When looking at the receptors, ginsenosides appear to be phytoestrogens but whether they influence pro-estrogenic responses or anti-estrogenic responses in vivo (competing against estrogens) is not clear; interaction with the receptors in general is well established, however

Studies using the entire Ginseng extract without isolating ginsenosides note that 25mcg/mL (30% Ginsenosides) failed to exert estrogenic effects via the receptor[123] with another study failing to find an IC50 value due to inability to active the receptor.[124] This latter study also noted a failure of Black Cohosh and Dong Quai.[124]

7.3. Thyroid Hormones

A study in persons with congestive heart failure (CHF) given one course of ginseng (injections of 2g red ginseng diluted to 10mL) in addition to standard therapy of cardiotonics and diuretics noted that, relative to standard therapy alone, there was a statistically insignificant increase in benefits on standard symptoms and signs yet the benefits on thyroid hormones (increase in T3 and T4 with a decrease in rT3) seen with standard therapy were increased further with the addition of red ginseng.[7] Levels of thyroid hormones in the ginseng and standard therapy treated group, despite being larger than standard therapy alone, did not reach normalization relative to healthy controls.[7]


Edit8. Interactions with Sexuality

8.1. Male Reproductive Organs

In male rats given Panax Ginseng, increases in nucleic acid levels[108] and increases in protein synthesis[125] in the testes have been noted, and increased gonadal weight in young rat pups given the ethanolic extract of Panax Ginseng (two Korean texts mentioned in following citation);[108] increased protein synthesis has been noted in the testes in more recent research as well, wherein 1g/kg Panax Ginseng orally to rats for 56 days increased spermatogensis and GDNF mRNA, which is important to spermatogenic stem cell maintenance.[126]

General testicular protective effects also appear to exist, and may help normalize testicular function in the state of type II diabetes when taken over the course of 90 days.[127] Coingestion of Red Ginseng Extract alongside Alcohol can minimize the negative effects of alcohol on testicular function, according to one rat study,[128] and reduce the damage done by physical trauma to the testicles according to another rat study.[129]

When tested in human interventions, Panax Ginseng appears to increase spermatogenesis and sperm motility in men who suffer from infertiltiy.[110]

In regards to the testicles, Panax Ginseng appears to be healthy. A general increase in testicular protein synthesis appears to be present and concomitant protection from some disease states or toxins (alcohol) might exist

In the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED), one pilot study using 60 patients with mild to moderate ED were given 3g of Korean Red Ginseng in three daily doses of 1g with meals for 12 weeks. Korean Red Ginseng appeared to be effective, with 66.6% of the patients in the KRG group reported improved erections while the placebo group was not significantly different from baseline.[112] Another blinded study with a larger sample (86) noted that regular Panax Ginseng over a period of 8 weeks, dosed at 1,000mg twice daily (daily dose totaling 2g) found significant improvements in erectile function as assessed by the same rating scale.[130] This study suffered from a large dropout rate.

A systemic review conducted on Korean Red Ginseng[131] assessing seven randomized controlled trials found consistent benefits associated with Red Ginseng Extract, with doses ranging from 600mg taken thrice a day (totaling 1,800mg) in four studies (two cited here)[132][133] or 900mg taken thrice daily (totaling 2,700mg) in two studies (one cited here).[111] The seven trials assessed were of variable quality, with three trials claiming double-blind randomization[112][134] and only one disclosing methods of blinding.[111] It was concluded that Korean Red Ginseng holds promise but requires more rigorous testing.[131] This study was conducted prior to (and thus excludes ) another intervention noted in the section above.[130] Another systemic review[83] evaluating 7 clinical trials of male sexual function that assessed the studies on the Jadad scale (to rate study quality) noted that the 6 trials with most promising results were consistently of a lower research quality (less than a rating of 3 on the Jadad scale), whereas the one with the best Jadad rating showed benefits that did not reach statistical significance.[134] The conclusion was that there is a moderate level of evidence currently.

Appears to have potential in helping erectile function (with implications on psychogenic erectile dysfunction as well as vascular) and appears to be more well researched than other herbs catered to promote erectile function; still needs some stronger research though


Edit9. Inflammation and Immunology

9.1. Immunity

Ginseng has been reported before as being a 'vaccine adjuvant', being able to amplify the efficacy of vaccines when Ginseng is in circulation when the vaccine is administered.[135] It appears to be further synergistical with aluminum hydroxide.[136][137] Coadministration of ginseng extracts alongside the antigen appears to improve the immune antibody response.[137] When administered as the G115 extract (4% Ginsenosides) in a 100mg dose to humans, it appears that G115 has the ability to reduce the occurrence of the flu when G115 is taken for 12 weeks and the vaccination is applied at week 4.[138] This human study noted that the addition of Ginseng brought the rate of flu occurrence down to 35.7% of the control group with no clinically relevant side effects recorded over 12 weeks.[138]

In a study using the polysaccharide of Panax Ginseng (Ginsan) in isolation, 100mg/kg injection once a day for two days prior to infection with an antigen resulted in significantly (3-4 fold) higher levels of IgG1 and IgG2, as well as secretory IgA (up to 2-fold) when compared to mice who did not receive Ginsan before infection.[139] The observed effects are thought to be through enhanced CCL3 expression in Peyer's patches, which influences dendritic cell migration[140] and may positively influence antigen presentation to immune cells; this theory came from coadministration of COX inhibitors both reducing the increased CCL3 expression as well as reducing the beneficial observed effects of Panax Ginseng, although the tested COX inhibitor (aspirin) did not negatively influence immunity per se.[139]

Coingestion of Panax Ginseng alongside an antigen (vaccinations) appears to augment the immune response to the antigen, and may work synergistically with vaccinations by being an immunostimulant during this time

Additionally, Red ginseng polysaccharides have been demonstrated to increase Natural Killer (NK) Cell activity[141] which seems to also apply to the polysaccharide Ginsan (not exclusive to Red Ginseng).[142] When fed orally to rats, an increase in Natural Killer Cell activity is seen with Panax Ginseng.[143] When 100mg G115 (4% Ginsenosides) is administered to humans for 12 weeks, measurements at 8-12 weeks note a doubling of Natural Killer Cell activity relative to control.[138] This increase in Natural Killer Cells has been failed to be noted with 2g of a 60% ethanolic extract over 6 weeks in athletes, however.[53]

9.2. Macrophages

Acidic polysaccharides from Korean Red Ginseng appear to activate Nitric Oxide (NO) signalling in macrophages when administered via injection or incubated.[144][141] This apparent activation of macrophages is pro-inflammatory in nature[145] and mediated by Nitric Oxide;[144] due to it being of lesser potency than lipopolysaccharide (LPS, research standard) and coincubation of the two showing that the acidic polysaccharides could actually attenuate increases in NO induced by LPS, it appears that Acidic polysaccharides possess immunomodulatory potential via TLR2, a receptor similar to TLR4.[145]

Other polysaccharides isolated from Korean Red Ginseng known as acidic polysaccharides also appear to influence the immune system and more-so when paired with pidotimod, a compound structurally similar to Piracetam.[141][146] Fermentation of Korean Red Ginseng further augments the anti-inflammatory potential of Red Ginseng as assessed by in vitro macrophage activation.[38]

The macrophages (Pacman immune cells) appear to be the target for immunomodulation by Ginseng polysaccharides. They act in inflammatory manners when there is no inflammatory stimuli present, and outcompete inflammatory stimuli to cause a net reduction when both of them co-exist; a 'smoothing of the hills and valleys' effect also seen with Ganoderma lucidum

While the polysaccharide fragment appears to have TLR2 as a surface receptor,[145] Ginsenosides from Panax Ginseng appear to interact with TLR4. The aforementioned augmentation of vaccines was demonstrated with isolated Ginsenosides Rg1 and Re that were able to enhance immune cell proliferation and cytokine secretion from macrophages, but not in mice with a defective TLR4 receptor;[147] Rg1 appears to act by another mechanism as well though, since abolishing the receptor did not fully prevent Rg1's activity like it did Re.[147]

When tested in isolation at 20mg/kg in mice, Re appears to inhibt binding of LPS to the TLR4 receptor somewhat and prevent pro-inflammatory events via this pathway.[148] When tested against active controls, Ginsenoside Re (2.5mg/kg) appears to be less effective than indomethacin (5mg/kg) in paw edema tests of inflammation.[149] The effects of Ginsenoside Re appear to be dose dependent, with 1mg/kg in mice showing little to no anti-inflammatory effects while 5mg/kg[149] and 20mg/kg[148] show promise when ingested orally.

Ginsenoside components are also active in the immune system, with Re being fairly potent

9.3. Cytokines

When comparing mice at rest against mice at rest with 25mg/kg G115 extract, it appears that the addition of G115 is able to increase production of IL-1b and TNF-a significantly more than control, although less than control subject to swimming exercise; significant differences appeared to be minimized 3-4 weeks after the start of the extract.[150] Increased interleukin response was also seen in another study, where IL-2, IL-10, and Interferon-gamma were increased in response to Panax Ginseng, while IL-4 had no response.[143] This lack of response of IL-4 has been seen elsewhere alongside a lack of effecton IL-12,[52] and the increaes of Interferon-gamma quantified at a 2-fold increase in response to 10ug/mL Panax Ginseng (10% Mixed ginsensoides).[52]

9.4. Exercise Immunology

A study using Panax Ginseng G115 (4% ginsenosides, 0.5-1% Rg1, 0.9-1.4% Rb1, 04-0.6% Rb2) at 25mg/kg bodyweight in mice found that, in response to 4 weeks of swimming stress, that the control exercise group had a spike of TLR4 activity followed by reduced expression leading up to 4 weeks while exercise alongside G115 suppressed the first spike in TLR4 expression and subsequently increased it up to 3 weeks; suggesting G115 suppressed the initial increase in macrophage TLR4 expression and reversed the exercise-induced immunosuppresion somewhat.[150]

When looking at macrophage cytokine release (IL-1b and TNF-a), it appears that G115 acts to normalize them, reducing the spikes seen after one week of exercise while elevating their release later on in the testing period.[150]


Edit10. Interactions with Cancer

10.1. General

Panax Ginseng is being investigated for its interactions with cancer due to observational (uncontrolled) evidence that usage of Panax Ginseng is associated with over 2-fold reduced risk of several types of cancer, with Odds Ratio (0.5 being half the risk, 0.25 a quarter the risk) being 0.47 for oropharyngeal cancers; 0.20 for esophageal cancer; 0.36 for stomach cancer; 0.42 for colorectal cancer; 0.48 for liver cancer; 0.22 for pancreatic cancer; 0.18 for laryngeal cancer; 0.55 for lung cancer; and 0.15 for ovarian cancer.[151] Red Ginseng was associated with a greater risk reduction (0.2) than was fresh (0.37) or white (0.30-0.57).[151]

A polysaccharide from Panax Ginseng (not a ginsenoside) has been demonstrated to exert anti-cancer like effects in vitro on bladder cancer cells through minimizing expression of muscarinic receptors.[24]

10.2. Red Ginseng and Rg(3)

20(S)-Rg(3), the unique Ginsenoside from Korean Red Ginseng fermentation, is currently being investigated for its anti-cancer effects.

When incubated with human glioma cells, it appears that 20(S)-Rg(3) can induce cellular senescence (aging) in cancer cells by inducing pro-oxidative reactions and then inducing Akt phosphorylation and p21 and p16 upregulation; coincubation with anti-oxidants and inhibiting the p53/p21 pathway abolished these effects.[152] These pro-oxidative effects have also been seen in Hep3B liver carcinoma cells, where cytotoxicity was noted with 10uM 20(S)-Rg(3) and nuclear fragmentation (apoptotic cell death), and these effects were also abolished by the addition of N-AcetylCysteine as anti-oxidant.[153] This study also noted the Ginsenoside Rh2 as having the same properties as 20(S)-Rg(3).[153]


Edit11. Interactions with Aesthetics

11.1. Skin Quality

Oral ingestion of Red Ginseng has been shown to reduce wrinkles when consumed over 24 weeks by older women (average age of 51.9), although confounded with other supplements.[154] 10 daily capsules of Ginsenoside Rb1 from Red ginseng (10.85mg) Torilin from Torilus fructus 0.12mg) and Ioganin from Corni fructus (3.33mg) totalling 3g Korean Red Ginseng Extract daily, and procollagen I mRNA levels were elevated 94% above baseline. Effects were seen at the first measurement of 12 weeks and held stable at 24 weeks,[154] and this study failed to notice any significant differences when looking at skin pigmentation, water content of the skin, and the skin's elasticity and thickness.

When looking at animal interventions with UV(B) induced wrinkling, the prevention of wrinkles associated with Korean Red Ginseng is said to be attributed more to inhibiting collagen degradation rather than inducing collagen synthesis.[155]

Mechanistically, Ginsenosides have been found to increase mRNA transcription of Hyaluron Synthase (via compound K[156]) and induce collagen synthase I through either PPARd activation[157] or Smad signalling.[158] The former activation was seen with Ginsenoside Rb1 while the latter was seen with whole Panax extract. Human interventions have noted an increase of procollagen I mRNA by up to 94%, suggesting that these mechanisms apply after oral ingestion of 3g Korean Red Ginseng.[154]

Has the potential and the mechanisms to increase skin quality and perhaps reduce wrinkles when consumed orally, but the one human study is confounded with two other herbs. More evidence is needed

Four animal studies have been conducted investigating Panax Ginseng and UV(B) radiation damage, although all have been conducted with Korean Red Ginseng.[159][155][160][161] These studies tend to suggest that Panax Ginseng, via the ginsenoside Rb1, prevent UV(B) induced disruption of collagen fibers and help to normalize some biomarkers that are changed by UV(B) radiation (MMP-1, collagen I mRNA and protein content, TGF-b1), with topical application being slightly more effective in general protection than oral administration.[161]

The aforementioned lack of increasing hydration observed in humans may be secondary to preventing UV(B) induced drying of the skin, as 0.5-1% Korean Red Ginseng in irradiated mice acts to restore hydration.[162]

General protective effects from UV(B) radiation may underlie the anti-wrinkle effect mentioned before, attributed to helping protect cells from damage and thus reduce the rates of collagen dysfunction and cellular damage

11.2. Hair Quality and Regrowth

Possibly through having 5a-reductase inhibiting properties, Panax Ginseng (and more-so Red Ginseng or isolated Ginsenoside Ro or Rg(3) in particular) can induce hair regrowth in androgen-treated mice and may offer therapeutic potential for hair loss in men suffering from androgenic alpoceria.[39] In this study, Panax Ginseng outperformed American Ginseng in vivo (due to having higher Ginsenoside Ro content) and was outperformed by Red Ginseng (in vitro analysis of 5-AR inhibition), a unique source of Ginsenoside Rg(3); dose-dependent negation of testosterone-induced hair growth suppression was seen at a topically applied dose of 1mg/mL and was more effective the higher the Ginsenoside Ro content. Red Ginseng was not tested topically.[39] It should be noted that although Ginsensoside Ro is a 5-AR inhibitor, it does not outright promote hair regrowth; Rg1 was also ineffective while Rb1 and especially Rg(3) were more effective at promoting hair regrowth independent of androgens.[163] These lead to the conclusions that Korean Red Ginseng extract seems to be more effective than regular Panax Ginseng at inducing hair regrowth.[163]

The aforementioned effects extend to the fruits as well, where Fructae Panax Ginseng at 1 and 10mg/mL concentrations (0.1mL daily, delivering 0.1-1mg Panax) applied topically could promote hair regrowth by promoting hair shaft proliferation (after physically removing the hairs) and was theorized to promote early teolgen to anagen conversion of hair follicles, with 10mg/mL having greater potency than a solution of 5% minoxidil used as active control.[29] When tested in vitro, the ratio of Bcl-2 to Bax was greatly in favor of Bcl-2 at 10mg/mL but negated itself at 100ug/mL; suggesting 10mg/mL conferred a promotion of cell viability.[29] This promotion of cell viability has been demonstrated elsewhere in hair follicles.[164]

General anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory propeties in human hair cells have also been noted[165] as well as anti-inflammatory effects when applied topically to research animals.[166]

Human studies have been conducted, with oral administration of 3g of Korean Red Ginseng daily being able to promote hair density in young atopic patients (non-androgenic, mixed gender) over a period of 16 weeks as assessed by the SCORAD index.[167] The effects seen here were correlated with immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels, where average levels were 1049.3 (although ranging from 82 to over 5,000) and after 16 weeks decreased to 56% of their initial value; an increased water content of scalp skin was also observed.[167]

Appears to be effective at inducing hair regrowth when added to a topical solution at a concentration of 1-10mg/mL (tablespoon of shampoo usage per shampooing as a rough approximation of volume) and 3g oral ingestion of Korean Red Ginseng daily appears to promote some effects that are independent of androgen status. Fruits are also somewhat effective, but both the fruits and Red Ginseng outperform regular Ginseng


Edit12. Interactions with other Organ Systems

12.1. Hearing and the Ears

Various tests with Korean Red Ginseng suggest that bioactives (most likely ginsenosides) in Ginseng can protect ear cells from toxicity induced by cisplatin[168] and gentamicin,[169] two compounds that have been shown to damage audition. Damage induced by excessive noise has also been demonstrated to be rehabilitated somewhat due to an uncommon ginsenoside metabolite called compound K.[170] The benefits in this last study were not full recovery, and were seen with both 5 and 10mg/kg bodyweight compound K as well as 100mg/kg bodyweight Korean Red Ginseng.[170]

One study has been conducted in rats using Korean Red Ginseng (KRG) at the dose of 500mg/kg intragastrically (into the stomach) to assess the damage to the auditory canals induced by gentamicin injections. It was found that the hearing threshold of KRG alongside gentamicin was approximately that of control (suggesting protection) and there was an apparent lack of hair cell damage when KRG was ingested; administration of KRG alone reduced the hearing threshold to 79% of control, indicating better hearing induced by KRG.[169] The effects seen were attributed mostly to Rb1 and Rb2, two specific ginsenosides (more than Rg1 and Re, the other two tested Ginsenosides).[169]

No human interventions currently, but Red Ginseng Extract appears to have mechanisms to promote auditory health and maintenance

12.2. Stomach and Ulcers

Korean Red ginseng was able to protect against stomach ulcers induced by Indomethacin (an NSAID) and Alcohol when ingested an hour prior to the insult at doses of 100 and 300mg/kg in mice, but failed to exert protective effects against HCl (stomach acid).[171] Ingestion of 30mg/kg also confered protective effects, but failed to reach statistical signifiance, and no dose completely abolished the damage by ethanol (although came close to abolishing damage by indomethacin).[171] The mechanisms of protection in these studies appears to be through induction of Heat Shock Protein 27 (Hsp27) and 70 (Hsp70)[172] and appears to be secondary to Ginsenoside Rb1 [173][174] and polysaccharides.[175][176]

The anti-stress properties of Panax Ginseng (anti-fatigue and anxiolytic) may also contribute to stomach ulcer protection secondary to preventing the stress-induced exacerbation of stomach ulcers.

Different combination formulas using Panax Ginseng have been associated with reduced stomach ulcers secondary to less stress (a contributor to stomach ulcer formation) such as chai-hu-gui-zhi-tang[177] and N-095.[178] However, causation cannot be placed on Panax Ginseng in these studies.

Appears to have multiple mechanisms by which Panax Ginseng can confer protection against ulcers, either directly or indirectly, and has shown acute benefit in animal models in response to anti-inflammatory NSAIDs and Alcohol consumption; no human studies currently


Edit13. Nutrient-Nutrient Interactions

13.1. Kai-Xin-San

Kai-Xin-San (KXS) is a Traditional Chinese Medicine mixture of four herbs; Panax Ginseng alongside Hoelen, polygala, and Acorus gramineus. It is traditionally used for "the treatment of emotion-thought disease" (settling fright, quieting the spirit, etc.) and apparently is heart healthy. Extending these claims into the Western realm, KXS is being investigated for its anti-depressant effects. Kai Xin San is used in a 3:3:2:2 ratio where the dry weights of the plants and mushroom (Hoelen) are measured before extraction, with the former two higher numbers belonging to Panax Ginseng and Acorus Gramineus.

It is known that the role of acorus gramineus in this decoction is to increase bioavailability of ginsenosides from the gut (unable to promote uptake into the brain).[179]

Doses of 0.3, 0.9, and 2.7g/kg of a water-extract daily have shown efficacy in preventing depressive symptoms from chronic and mild stress in rats, and when compared to an active control of fluoxetine (10mg/kg) KXS at the highest dose was significantly more effective in normalizing test parameters (Two-Way Active Avoidance task, Latency of Feeding).[180] Fluoxetine and all doses of KXS were equally effective in the sucrose-preference test (used as a measure of anhedonia, or a reduction in pleasure seeking induced by stress) and was equally effective at reducing ACTH and corticosterone levels in serum, but fluoxetine was less effective at suppressing an increase in acetylcholinesterase in the hippocampus seen with stress.[180] KXS was slightly more effective at elevating dopamine levels, with no significant influences on serotonin or noradrenaline.[180] These increases in monoamines (one highly significant, the other two not statistically significant) appears to be a mechanism of KXS's anti-depressive effects, with a later study noting significant increases in all three neurotransmitters.[181]

Some animal research suggests that the Kai Xin San formulation is effective in treating depression, with similar potency to fluoxetine when the depression is induced by chronic mild stress

A study using KXS in mice with chronic fatigue syndrome (induced by forced wheel running) given 175, 350, and 700mg/kg bodyweight once a day 40 minutes before running exercise over 4 weeks (7.14:1 concentrated extract, 60% ethanol for Panax and rest water extracts; 3:3:2:2 ratios for Panax, Acorus, Hoelen, and Polygala; respectively) found the combination was effective in combating chronic fatigue syndrome (assessed by electric shock time).[182] When compared to a positive control of Modafinil at 13mg/kg bodyweight, 175 and 350mg/kg bodyweight were significantly less effective (although more than control) while 700mg/kg was not significantly different, although still trended to be less potent.[182] KXS (350, 700mg/kg) could normalize the reductions in testosterone and glycogen associated with exhaustive exercises while Modafinil was not effective.[182]

Appears to have some efficacy in preventing chronic fatigue syndrome effects; limited research though, even for animals

Acorus gramineus is one of the four herbs in Kai Xin San (KXS) and is known as delivering servant to Panax Ginseng according to Traditional Chinese Medicine. These claims tend to reflect bioavailability and absorption, and when 3g/kg of Panax Ginseng (17.9mg Rg1, 19.8mgRe,30.6mg Rb1) along with Hoelen and Polygala was tested with or without the addition of Acorus significantly elevated the AUC of all three tested Ginsenosides, the Cmax of Rg1 and Re, and did not affect the Tmax values; the increase in AUC was in part due to increase absorption rates (indicative by Cmax) and reduced clearance rates.[179] Specifically, the Cmax was increased to 194%, 157%, and 144% (nonsignificant) relative to the mixture without Acorus for Rg1, Re, and Rb1; respectively. AUC0–∞ increased to 128%, 138%, and 141% and clearance rates dropped to 58% of baseline values for Re (with the other two Ginsenosides having their clearance rates reduced by either Hoelen or Polygala, but not Acorus).[179]

It should be noted that circulating levels of these three Ginsenosides was higher when taken alongside Hoelen and Polygala, without the Acorus, when compared to Panax in isolation; it appears the other two compounds may confer benefits.[179] Also, the ratios of circulating cerebral levels and circulating serum levels did not differ significantly in any tested group (Panax, KXS without Acorus, true KXS) suggesting that the three coingested medicines do not influence partitioning to the brain, just general absorption and circulating levels.[179]

The combination appears to favor the circulating levels of Panax Ginseng and its active ingredients, and the combination of Acorus seems to be significantly better at improving circulating levels than does the addition of either Hoelen or Polygala

Oral toxicity tests on KXS suggest it is relatively safe, with the first sign of sub-chronic (91 days) toxicity (increased white blood cell and lympocyte count and an increase in alkaline phosphatase) occurring at 9g/kg oral ingestion daily, with recovery occurring 30 days after cessation and no mortality at this dosage; sub-chronic usage of 3g/kg was not associated with any side-effects.[183] With acute toxicity testing, no mortality was seen at 19.67g/kg and 100% mortality achieved at 60.04g/kg in rats, and thus the No Observable Adverse Effects Limit (NOAEL) was deemde 19.67g/kg while the lowest observable adverse effect limit (LOAEL) was 24.59g/kg and the LD50 greater than 32.59g/kg.[183]

A dosage about 3-5 fold higher than the highest recommended dose appears to still be safe, although then doubling that appears to be associated with toxicity symptoms

13.2. Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo biloba is another herb that has traditionally been used as a cognitive booster, and has been studied in conjunction with and alongside Panax Ginseng due to both of them being used traditionally for similar goals.

One study assessing 360mg Ginkgo against 400mg Panax ginseng as well as their combination against placebo found that the combination of the two was significantly more effective than either in isolation regarding simple reaction time (4 hours after ingestion), improving delayed word recall 1-4 hours after ingestion, and improving spatial memory.[67] The combination was also antagonistic on some aspects, reducing the benefits seen with parameters of accuracy (numeric working memory, digital vigilance false alarms, and accuraccy of immediate word recall) although the combination still outperformed placebo in regards to tests on memory.[67]

The combination of the two may be additive or synergistic in short-term memory and stimulation (reaction time) but possibly at the cost of accuracy

13.3. Carbohydrate

Panax Ginseng administration causes a drop in blood glucose in healthy persons while increasing cognition, although no significant correlations appear to exist between the two.[68] When Panax Ginseng is consumed alongside 25g glucose, there do not appear to be any additive or synergistic effects of the combination while both, in isolation, can improve cognitive function in healthy adults.[92]

No significant beneficial interactions between carbohydrates and Panax ginseng

13.4. N-095

A combination supplement deemed N-095 consisting of Korean Red Ginseng, polygala root, saffron, antelope horn and aloe wood has been investigated into. One study investigating their combination used 330mg Red Ginseng to 100mg antelope horn, 90mg saffron, 30mg polygola root, and 10mg aloe wood; although also included 100mg pearl and 1.16mg borneol as perfume for the mixture.[178] Recommended human dose is apparently 1160mg total.[178]

It appears to have similar properties to Panax, and when administered via drinking water in a fasted state not significantly able to influence resting behaviour but decreasing experimental inflammation, reducing stress and histamine induced ulcers, and augmenting hexobarbital-induced sedation.[178] N-095 has been implicated in increasing NGF in the hippocampus and cerebral cortex[184] while increasing blood flow to the hippocampus of rats.[185]

When compared against Red Ginseng in isolation, 100mg/kg of the combination supplement appears more potent than 284mg/kg at preventing formation of gastric ulcers induced by stress, and 300mg/kg was equally effective in reducing ulcer formation by histamine.[178] There were no significant differences between combination supplement and Red Ginseng at 100mg/kg and 28.4mg/kg, respectively, on forced swim test time and fatigue.[178]

No studies comparing the isolated ingredients together, in an aim to determine synergism, have been found. They may merely be additive, although the effects on reducing stress appear to be synergistic and better than Red Ginseng alone.

Appears to be a cocktail used in research, synergism has not been fully elucidated but this concoction appears to be more stress-reducing than Red Ginseng alone with no significant effect on anti-fatigue


Edit14. Safety and Toxicology

14.1. General

A systemic review of 13 databases assessing the safety of ginseng supplementation in humans[83] found that, among 57 randomized clinical trials predating March 2009, found low incidence of harm. 16 trials reported side effects of any magnitude while 14 did not (and 27 did not specify), side-effects were mostly related to the gastrointestinal tract (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and cramps) with Korean Red Ginseng thrice being associated with gastric upset;[83] one study noted hypoglycemia in a type II diabetic.[107]

Doses in healthy humans to higher ranges such as 2g for 4 weeks[186][187] 4.5g for 12 weeks,[188] and up to 3-6g of Korean Red Ginseng for 8 weeks[189] tend to show similar lack of apparent toxicity.

14.2. Pregnancy

In vitro tests conducted have suggested Panax Ginseng, particularily Ginsenoside Rg1 but others as well, can be damaging to the fetus and embryo.[190][191][192] In response to this, an in vivo model using mice was undergone and given 20, 200, or 2,000mg/kg Korean Red Ginseng daily did not influence maternal weight, feed intake, abortions or embryonic implantations.[193] Continuous consumption throughout gestation did not alter any primary parameter in the pups, nor was placental or fetal weights affected; mortality of the pups non-significantly declined in the highest dose group.[193] When measured in the blood, there was no significant detection of Rg1, Re, or Rc in the blood (possibly due to metabolism into other entities) suggesting a distinction between the in vitro and in vivo studies.[193]

Correlational studies in human assessing Panax Ginseng and pregnancy find no significant correlations between Panax Ginseng consumption and altered birth/pregnancy events.[194][195]

The harm associated with Ginseng in vitro (lab tests outside of living bodies) may not apply to orally ingested Ginseng, as no association with Ginseng products and pregnancy abnormalities has been noted

14.3. Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is a condition affecting males while involves estrogenic fat deposites on the pectoral muscles under the areolae, at least one case study has demonstrated a temporal relationship between Panax Ginseng and Gynecomastia.[196] In this study, a 12 year old boy taking Korean Red Ginseng for a month saw doctors about estrogenic developments of breast tissue, and the growth appeared to stop after cessation of Red Ginseng for a month.
