The cheat sheet to better health, a better body, and a better life.
Discover the truth about supplements that will help you control blood sugar, sleep better, boost your brain power, and achieve other health goals to live a better life.
Stop wasting time and money. Find the supplements that work!
If you've found this page, then you're probably looking to find out the truth about supplements - which work, and which don't. You know that supplements can help, but you don't know who to trust. Everywhere you turn, you're overwhelmed with companies promising you the latest and the greatest.
For the past two and a half years, we've been trudging through thousands and thousands of peer-reviewed scientific studies so that we can thoroughly understand supplements. Having analyzed over 30,000 individual studies, we've come to learn what works (and what doesn't).
Now, before we go any further, it's important to note: we are NOT here to sell you supplements. We don't own a line of supplements that we will steer you towards.
Beyond that, we're not in cahoots with anyone that does. In fact, we make NO brand recommendations. We make NO product recommendations. All we do is make sense of scientific research on supplementation and nutrition.
We've been compiling this research for a long time, and our Supplement-Goals Reference Guide puts it all together in an easy-to-use manner. You simply look up whichever supplement (eg "Vitamin D") or health goal (eg "blood glucose") you're interested in, and you will instantly know which supplements work (and which don't). Our guide literally solves all your supplement confusion.

“no-nonsense, accurate information that can help a beginner”
In many ways, the fitness industry is broken. And among the many people trying to fix the biggest issues, examine.com is a big part of the solution. They provide no-nonsense, accurate information that can help a beginner as much as it can someone who has been living a fit lifestyle for years. Their accuracy and credible makes them invaluable.
So who are we? We're an independent organization, and we do not get paid to shill for supplements. We don't recommend brands, and we don't recommend products. Instead, we keep our heads down, make sense of all the scientific research being conducted, and make recommendations based on evidence. We let the research speak for itself, and it's how we've gained the respect of doctors and nutrition experts. Every day, over 15,000 people visit our site to learn more about supplementation and nutrition.
These are just a few of the reasons why we're proud to present a guide that's:
- 300+ Supplements. We cover everything from 5-HTP and Aloe Vera all the way to Whey Protein and Zinc. We even cover supplements you may not have heard of, from 1,3-Dimethylamylamine (also known as DMAA) to Valerian. If you can supplement it, we have it covered.
- 180+ Health Goals. You want to live a healthier life, and we will help you get there. Find out which supplements help you (and which hinder you) towards your goals.
- 2,563 human studies. We've excluded animal and petri-dish studies, and only list human studies. You can rely on them being applicable to you, not rats.
With easy to use tables, all you need to do is simply search and click on whatever supplement or health goal you're interested in. Instantly, find supplements that work.

“Unbiased and meticulously put together,”
During my years of study in science and Medicine one of the first and most powerful messages elucidated is that you will never have all the answers. So as a consequence you rapidly discover how to go about finding those answers...
Years later I can honestly say that my go to evidence-based information source on supplements would have to be Examine.com. Unbiased and meticulously put together, Examine.com provides a clear and detailed resource for novices and professionals alike.

“the most diligent and comprehensive resource for science-based supplement information”
Examine.com is the most diligent and comprehensive resource for science-based supplement information, bar none. I refer students and colleagues to the site regularly, and I use it myself.
Let's rewind a bit. The use of herbs and other nutraceuticals as health supplements go back to the origins of civilized man. While not using the scientific method itself, our ancestors were taking notes on what supplements seemed to have what effect. They were wrong at times, but there was reasoning behind their choices.
Until 1990, dietary supplements were tightly regulated by the FDA. In 1990, The Nutrition Labeling and Education Act was passed, which expanded dietary supplements, but still required FDA pre-approval. It was the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act in 1994 that opened up everything.
This resulted in both good and bad developments.
On the good side, this spurred more research in supplementation.
On the bad side, supplements became awash in marketing hype. It became commonplace to misinterpret or misrepresent research for financial gain. What was a promising field became overwhelmed with marketing hyperbole. It became very hard to trust what worked and what didn't.
The Supplement-Goals Reference Guide lets you quickly identify supplements that can help in your journey towards optimal health. There is no website or book that covers supplements like we do.
Let's be honest - supplements are a billion dollar industry. It's an industry built on big promises, great packaging, and fantastic marketing. You can find supplement companies listed in public stock exchanges all over the world, some of them worth billions on their own!
Lets take glutamine for example, an amino acid that is sold as a muscle builder. But did you know that it only builds muscle tissue... in petri-dishes? Or for those with severe burns? And did you know that glutamine is big business, generating over $600,000,000 a year in business? For the average gym-goer, glutamine is useless.
Examples like the above is why we created this guide - so you can separate fact from fiction. We tell the truth, and that's why most supplement companies hate us. And we wont stop accumulating more information. Information that will be right at your fingertips via our Supplement-Goals Reference Guide. Information that will save you money.
How about something that does work?
Ever heard of berberine? Originally used in traditional Chinese medicine, it's an alkaloid extracted from a yellow herb. Doesn't sound too impressive eh?
But diabetics who've used berberine love berberine. And why? Because scientific studies on its effects on blood glucose levels found that it had a strong effect in reducing blood glucose levels. In fact, its strength is comparable to the prescription drug metformin!
This kind of powerful information is what you will find in the Supplement-Goals Reference Guide. Information that will help you unlock your health.
You may be wondering - how can supplement companies get away with all this marketing hyperbole?
Let's go back to our previous example of glutamine. It was found to be a potent muscle-builder... except all of that muscle-building happened in petri-dishes (our intestines sequester glutamine in our bodies, and thus very little actually gets to your muscles).
It's a great example on how animal testing and petri-dish testing, while extremely important in keeping science progressing, is abused by marketers looking to make a quick buck.
And that's why we focus only on studies that were performed with actual humans. While our main site has over 30,000 scientific studies, our Supplement-Goals Reference Guide has just over 2000 studies. These are clinical tests done with humans, analyzing and comparing the performance of specific supplementation against placebo controls.
This way, you can be safe knowing that our recommendations are applicable to you, not rats.
Our Supplement-Goals Reference Guide is full of information and factoids that will let you find supplements that work for you.
Within seconds you'll be browsing around, identifying health goals you want to improve, and finding supplements that will help you get there. With no buy links in our guide, you can trust that our recommendations are based on science, not on making a quick buck.
Here's a small sample of health goals you will find covered:
If you want to live a better life, the Supplement-Goals Reference Guide will get there. It will save you time and money as you achieve better health!

“it's absolutely vital”
When you consider the enormous and alarming amount of misleading and sometimes dangerous information that can be found in the world of health, nutrition and fitness today, the work being performed at Examine.com isn't just impressive, informative or thorough: it's absolutely vital. As a science-trained nutritionist, my entire work must be evidence-based if we are not to be constantly swayed by hyped up marketing claims or people's theories. “Straight talk about supplements”
Research driven, evidence based and over 20000+ citations. Being a health practitioner and fitness lover they bring research and supplementation to the next level. Quick, succinct reads. Straight talk about specific supplements and gives us the direct facts. I will be recommending this site to all my clients and friends so they can learn about what they are taking, and what benefits (if any) they are getting from supplements. There is no other site like this.

“my go-to resource for supplements and nutrition”
Examine.com is my go-to resource for supplements and nutrition. There is a lot of fluff out there in the industry about nutrition and what supplements to take, but the people behind Examine.com have put in the pain-staking time to back up or debunk these claims with science. It's hard to know what to believe and what to ignore, so when I want to read the latest research, I go to Examine.com.

“it's a MUST HAVE in my resources!”
Examine.com has been a personal resource of mine for years purely for the fact that they have one mission, to deliver un-biased evidenced based scientific data and research on a wide variety of common dietary supplements (in over 20,000 articles). The Supplement Goals Reference Guide is one of the most, if not the most, comprehensive guides I've seen on dietary supplements/nutrition. It's incredibly user friendly, factual, and straight to the point. I highly recommend this guide to my clients and other health care professionals, it's a MUST HAVE in my resources!
“packs a ton of useful info ... it's all covered”
The Supplement-Goals Reference Guide packs a ton of useful information into a convenient, easy to use package. Whether you want detailed information about specific supplements or what you should use based on your health goals, it's all covered.
Dr Bryan Chung, MD, PhD
“THE repository resource for nutritional supplement information”
Examine.com has become THE repository resource for nutritional supplement information. Most other similar databases fail at what they're good at, which is being accessible and being comprehensive. Their frequent updates stay on top of the literature as it evolves. Examine.com gives me an excellent overview of the body of work, which helps me filter and refine my search strategy when I'm looking up supplements that I get asked about that I've never heard of. The Human Effect Matrix provides interpretation that is lacking in every other supplement database in the world. Most people don't have the time or interest to develop high-level expertise, but need somewhere to turn to to make informed decisions about their supplements. That information is at Examine.com.
Laurent Bannock, MSc, CISSN, CSCS
“an essential tool in my toolbox as a nutritionist & lecturer”
For an objective evidenced based resource on supplements I HIGHLY Recommend 'The Supplement Goals Reference Guide'. Ever since getting a copy, I now consider an essential tool in my toolbox as a practising performance nutritionist & lecturer.
Aidan Goggins, B Pharm MSc Nutr Med, Author of The Health Delusion
“an invaluable resource”
The way we approach health is rapidly changing; the public demands both a greater say in their treatment and the option to utilise proven nutritional therapies. Examine.com offers an invaluable resource for achieving this, providing clear and well researched information that empowers the user, allowing an equal discourse between them and their healthcare provider.
When you dive into the pages of our Supplements-Goals Reference Guide, brace yourself.
Clocking in at over 900 pages and over 2000 human studies, it's a lot of information.
Don't try to read it all at once. Look up a supplement you're interested in (everyone's talking about Vitamin D right now). Or look up a health goal you want to optimize (see which supplements help decrease anxiety).
Once you get the hang of it, be prepared to be blown away. We promise you won't be confused by supplements again.
Q: Is this a one-time fee or do I pay every month?
One time. This isn't one of those recurring scams the other guys run. You pay us once, you get lifetime access. As long as we're updating Examine.com, you have the latest information at your fingertips.
Q: Does this come in a physical book?
At almost 800 pages, a physical copy of the Supplement-Goals Reference Guide would be big. The PDF lets you quickly and easily access supplement information wherever you are. Even without Internet-access.
Q: How does this differ from the main website?
Three big reasons:
