The cheat sheet to better health, a better body, and a better life.
Discover the truth about supplements that will help you control blood sugar, sleep better, boost your brain power, and achieve other health goals to live a better life.
Stop wasting time and money. Find the supplements that work!
If you've found this page, then you're probably looking to find out the truth about supplements - which work, and which don't. You know that supplements can help, but you don't know who to trust. Everywhere you turn, you're overwhelmed with companies promising you the latest and the greatest.
For the past two and a half years, we've been trudging through thousands and thousands of peer-reviewed scientific studies so that we can thoroughly understand supplements. Having analyzed over 25,000 individual studies, we've come to learn what works (and what doesn't).
Now, before we go any further, it's important to note: we are NOT here to sell you supplements. We don't own a line of supplements that we will steer you towards.
Beyond that, we're not in cahoots with anyone that does. In fact, we make NO brand recommendations. We make NO product recommendations. All we do is make sense of scientific research on supplementation and nutrition.
We've been compiling this research for a long time, and our Supplement-Goals Reference Guide puts it all together in an easy-to-use manner. You simply look up whichever supplement (eg "Vitamin D") or health goal (eg "blood glucose") you're interested in, and you will instantly know which supplements work (and which don't). Our guide literally solves all your supplement confusion.

“an invaluable resource for my work”
As a science-trained nutritionist, my entire work must be evidence-based if we are not to be constantly swayed by hyped up marketing claims or people's theories. But keeping abreast of research in every area of nutrition is impossible. When this guide landed in my inbox I was stoked. It is now an invaluable resource for my work. I have at my fingertips the studies to date on a particular supplement, I can click through to read them and I can see in one glance the conclusions that can be drawn. For anyone using or advising on supplement use, I cannot recommend this guide highly enough.

“Plenty of real science, no bro-science”
Examine.com rocks! It's a great source of information on the science of dietary supplements. Plenty of real science, no bro-science. It's the real deal. Kudos to Sol Orwell and Kurtis Frank for showing the rest of the nutrition world that indeed, there's plenty of science in the field of dietary supplements. Pass me the creatine please! :-)

“it's absolutely vital”
When you consider the enormous and alarming amount of misleading and sometimes dangerous information that can be found in the world of health, nutrition and fitness today, the work being performed at Examine.com isn't just impressive, informative or thorough: it's absolutely vital. Examine.com is more than just "another" source of information: in my opinion, it is *the* source, with easily understood breakdowns of complex concepts and research, informative topics and information that can be used *right now* to improve your health, your performance and your life. Examine.com is like a GPS system for navigating the suspect claims of lesser sources and arriving at the most important destination of them all: the Truth
So who are we? We're an independent organization, and we do not get paid to shill for supplements. We don't recommend brands, and we don't recommend products. Instead, we keep our heads down, make sense of all the scientific research being conducted, and make recommendations based on evidence. We let the research speak for itself, and it's how we've gained the respect of doctors and nutrition experts. Every day, over 15,000 people visit our site to learn more about supplementation and nutrition.
These are just a few of the reasons why we're proud to present a guide that's:
- 300+ Supplements. We cover everything from 5-HTP and Aloe Vera all the way to Whey Protein and Zinc. We even cover supplements you may not have heard of, from 1,3-Dimethylamylamine (also known as DMAA) to Valerian. If you can supplement it, we have it covered.
- 180+ Health Goals. You want to live a healthier life, and we will help you get there. Find out which supplements help you (and which hinder you) towards your goals.
- 2,388 human studies. We've excluded animal and petri-dish studies, and only list human studies. You can rely on them being applicable to you, not rats.
With easy to use tables, all you need to do is simply search and click on whatever supplement or health goal you're interested in. Instantly, find supplements that work.

“I can highly endorse it without reservation”
The Examine.com site and comprehensive reference guide are both fantastic achievements for which both Kurtis Frank and Sol Orwell should be commended. When it comes to unbiased and reliable, evidence-based information on dietary supplements, applied nutrition and a wide array of health goals, their online database and reference guide are second-to-none. There is literally no other site that I am aware of like it. Beyond the expansive, thorough and comprehensive nature of their reviews, it is well organized with good interpretations of the available data. It's easy to see how valuable this resource will continue to be to me and many of my colleagues. I can highly endorse it without reservation.

“THE repository resource for nutritional supplement information”
Examine.com has become THE repository resource for nutritional supplement information. Most other similar databases fail at what they're good at, which is being accessible and being comprehensive. Their frequent updates stay on top of the literature as it evolves. Examine.com gives me an excellent overview of the body of work, which helps me filter and refine my search strategy when I'm looking up supplements that I get asked about that I've never heard of. The Human Effect Matrix provides interpretation that is lacking in every other supplement database in the world. Most people don't have the time or interest to develop high-level expertise, but need somewhere to turn to to make informed decisions about their supplements. That information is at Examine.com.
Let's rewind a bit. The use of herbs and other nutraceuticals as health supplements go back to the origins of civilized man. While not using the scientific method itself, our ancestors were taking notes on what supplements seemed to have what effect. They were wrong at times, but there was reasoning behind their choices.
Until 1990, dietary supplements were tightly regulated by the FDA. In 1990, The Nutrition Labeling and Education Act was passed, which expanded dietary supplements, but still required FDA pre-approval. It was the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act in 1994 that opened up everything.
This resulted in both good and bad developments.
On the good side, this spurred more research in supplementation.
On the bad side, supplements became awash in marketing hype. It became commonplace to misinterpret or misrepresent research for financial gain. What was a promising field became overwhelmed with marketing hyperbole. It became very hard to trust what worked and what didn't.
The Supplement-Goals Reference Guide lets you quickly identify supplements that can help in your journey towards optimal health. There is no website or book that covers supplements like we do.
Let's be honest - supplements are a billion dollar industry. It's an industry built on big promises, great packaging, and fantastic marketing. You can find supplement companies listed in public stock exchanges all over the world, some of them worth billions on their own!
Lets take glutamine for example, an amino acid that is sold as a muscle builder. But did you know that it only builds muscle tissue... in petri-dishes? Or for those with severe burns? And did you know that glutamine is big business, generating over $600,000,000 a year in business? For the average gym-goer, glutamine is useless.
Examples like the above is why we created this guide - so you can separate fact from fiction. We tell the truth, and that's why most supplement companies hate us. And we wont stop accumulating more information. Information that will be right at your fingertips via our Supplement-Goals Reference Guide. Information that will save you money.
How about something that does work?
Ever heard of berberine? Originally used in traditional Chinese medicine, it's an alkaloid extracted from a yellow herb. Doesn't sound too impressive eh?
But diabetics who've used berberine love berberine. And why? Because scientific studies on its effects on blood glucose levels found that it had a strong effect in reducing blood glucose levels. In fact, its strength is comparable to the prescription drug metformin!
This kind of powerful information is what you will find in the Supplement-Goals Reference Guide. Information that will help you unlock your health.
You may be wondering - how can supplement companies get away with all this marketing hyperbole?
Let's go back to our previous example of glutamine. It was found to be a potent muscle-builder... except all of that muscle-building happened in petri-dishes (our intestines sequester glutamine in our bodies, and thus very little actually gets to your muscles).
It's a great example on how animal testing and petri-dish testing, while extremely important in keeping science progressing, is abused by marketers looking to make a quick buck.
And that's why we focus only on studies that were performed with actual humans. While our main site has over 25,000 scientific studies, our Supplement-Goals Reference Guide has just over 2000 studies. These are clinical tests done with humans, analyzing and comparing the performance of specific supplementation against placebo controls.
This way, you can be safe knowing that our recommendations are applicable to you, not rats.
Our Supplement-Goals Reference Guide is full of information and factoids that will let you find supplements that work for you.
Within seconds you'll be browsing around, identifying health goals you want to improve, and finding supplements that will help you get there. With no buy links in our guide, you can trust that our recommendations are based on science, not on making a quick buck.
Here's a small sample of health goals you will find covered:
If you want to live a better life, the Supplement-Goals Reference Guide will get there. It will save you time and money as you achieve better health!

“it's a MUST HAVE in my resources!”
Examine.com has been a personal resource of mine for years purely for the fact that they have one mission, to deliver un-biased evidenced based scientific data and research on a wide variety of common dietary supplements (in over 20,000 articles). The Supplement Goals Reference Guide is one of the most, if not the most, comprehensive guides I've seen on dietary supplements/nutrition. It's incredibly user friendly, factual, and straight to the point. I highly recommend this guide to my clients and other health care professionals, it's a MUST HAVE in my resources!
Dr. Bojan Kostevski, MD
“helps me save both time and money”
For me, the Supplement-Goals Reference comes as a relief as I often need to find a quick reference to a supplement but, being a busy guy, can't always afford spending time looking for the papers explaining it's effect and limitations. I have nothing but trust for the staff running examine.com and consider this to be a trusted source of unbiased and accurate information for not only finding the effect of, but also understanding limitations in the research conducted in the most common supplements. The reference guide helps me save both time and money (and sanity) since I can quickly asses and answer my patients' and clients' questions when it comes to supplements where I'm not 100% up to date with current research. Much recommended for anyone interested in the hard fact about supplements without having to spend hours looking for the references in scientific literature.

“an amazing job of sifting through thousands of research articles”
The guys at Examine.com are leading the way in weeding out the facts from the fallacies in terms of nutritional science and application. There's a reason I've had them do multiple guest posts on my site, and a bigger reason why they're some of the most highly shared and clicked on articles on my site. They do an amazing job of sifting through hundreds if not thousands of research articles and finding commonalities and divergences among them in order to give you the most up to date and comprehensive information possible. If you've ever been confused about what research tells you about nutrition and supplementation, look no further than these two and Examine.com.

“my go to resource”
Examine is my go to resource when I need information and answers for supplements. There are so many supplements out in the market nowadays, that it can be very deceiving to know what is effective and what's not. Examine gives you an idea of whether a supplement is legit or not, and gives you the research and studies for you to make a sound decision if you're inquiring about certain supplements.
Dr. Yoni Freedhoff, MD CCFP Dip ABBM
“a massive and helpful undertaking”
It’s insufficient to simply rely on belief, conjecture or internet advice to determine if supplements are right for you. Instead you need to rely on research. With Examine.com’s reference guide not only will you find their summary of the research, but also links to the original papers should you want to do your own due diligence. Truly a massive and helpful undertaking.
Dr. Michael Lewis, MD, MPH, MBA, FACPM
