Quick Summary

In this randomized controlled trial in participants with chronic kidney disease who were undergoing hemodialysis treatment, supplementing with creatine did not improve nutritional status and had limited effects on body composition.

What was studied?

The effects of supplementing with creatine in people with chronic kidney disease who were undergoing hemodialysis treatment.

The primary outcomes were changes in fat-free mass and the Malnutrition-Inflammation Score (MIS).

The secondary outcomes were body weight, total body water, skeletal muscle mass index (the sum of muscle mass of the limbs divided by height), handgrip strength, gait speed, serum phosphorus, creatinine, and urea.

The MIS determines nutritional status based on the individual’s clinical history (i.e., changes in body weight, dietary intake, and physical function), BMI, serum albumin, total iron binding capacity), and evidence of muscle loss or edema.
